Sheikh Zobair!

I was going through my old school books today to try and remember something silly I had bet on when I came across Shakespeare’s most amazing sonnet .. Now I could’ve simply copied and pasted it, but I actually typed it and really enjoyed doing so … :-) الشيخ زبير

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines
And often is his gold complexion dimmed
And every fair from fair sometime declines
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’est
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’est,

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee

By the way, I heard the silliest theory a couple of years ago from a friend that Shakespeare is originally Arab, and that his name is Sheikh Zobair! LMAO!

Now when you hear such bull you should act as if the person who said it doesn’t exist at all, which exactly what I did. I did not even discuss it with him, because I was busy looking for a sharp pencil to stick it in his ear all the way to the other one and put an end to his terrifying ignorance.

Now what’s interesting is: as I was going to conclude this post with the above sentence, I googled (شيخ زبير), I know, silly me … but take a wild guess!! Turns out that there are lots of people who actually support that absurd theory!

Can you friggin believe that?? Shakespeare is Basrawi! They actually specified (not guessed!) where he’s originally from!

The original title of the post was merely “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”

HEHEHEH … The reason they picked Basra, is that right next to Basra there is a little city called Al Zubair. So they made the short-circuit (can’t call it connection really)

Anyway, there is nothing that prevents someone from having roots elsewhere. I would have probably guessed that he was from Spain .. maybe closer to the east than we thought. And he may or may not have had inspiration from stories coming from the east.
It’s all possible… does anyone have a solid proof …. Not yet … and I doubt anyone would give it any serious thought

Whosane, before dismissing anything as observed, an investigation is probably needed unless it blatantly defies logic

who-sane ( I’ll call you Housain?), i always hated what he writes! i feel like a dump and i don’t understand what he is bull*

No waaay! I don’t believe such stuff.. they always like to relate foreigners to arabs.. msh fahmeh lei y3ne..nahfeh! al shekh zubeir!

Qwaider: I’ve been to Al Basrah and to Al Zubair in specific … weird eh? It was back in 1997 or 98, my cousin studied in Basrah and one day he had a car accident when he was driving and two of his friends were tragically killed, he survived, but we had to go there and pay the diyyeh (blood money)and have an official 3atwa, one of the guys who died was from Al Zubair. Did my cousin probably kill one of Shakespeare’s cousins? I really doubt it! Shakespeare form Al Zubair, this one really defies logic, at least from my perspective. :-)

Sel3: You can call me Husain … but DUDE! You’re hurting me! This is Shakespeare (or Sheikh Zubair) we’re talking about!!! The literary legacy he left us is just phenomenal!! I know the vocab he uses falls into utter oblivion, but nevertheless, his plays and poetry are undoubtedly the best!

Mrs. Al Ramahi: I know! Crazy stuff … there’s also a theory that George Bush is an Arab (kidding)… But I’d believe that if he’s originally from el 6afeeleh! lol :P

Ok, so I read sel3 comment and he put who-sane next to Husain and I am like…duh, who-sane just sounds like Husain, is it coincidence or pure genius on your part?

By the way, hubs gave me a copy of Sheikh Zobairs love poems for our fist year anniversary….aawwwwwwwwwww.

we arabs are funny and stupid at the same time, we like to think that this girl had sex with him for arab and muslim causes.
    hahahaha

7elo, tayeb, why not? ya3ni if shakespear was rooted back to arabs HE HAS a lot to be proud of! I think this happens in all cultures, that ppl are rooted to other origins, and I cant see this one as farfetched besara7a, inno why not? shoo inno wa7ad KBEER?!

bass agoool, hath el shakhs el kbeer elli gad 7alo (golet nimmer) is boring, dull, and stupid and i never EVER completed a whole story of him, i dont even know the right sequence of his 3ogla and juliet!

that is %100 right, he is Basrawi and I am Bruce Lee

Mohanned: I used to have an English teacher who claimed he was abducted by aliens! hmmmmmm … maybe he’s the same guy!!

ta2e3: yeah, he really is :P

sam: yeah I also think this Shakespeare’s best sonnet. Sonnets kind of remind of the roba3iyat. Has anyone read Samarcande by Amin Maalouf?

    Nimirspeare: shoo 7asheesh ma 7asheesh? oskot ma ti7keeeesh! ;-)

Mariam Ayyash: yes you’re right, why not … you know Ben Affleck is بينجامين عفلق, Frank Zappa is of Lebanese decent and so many others. It could be as Nemir said that he is شخص كبير or شيخ زبير … but to be honest … he’s anything but boring, dull and stupid. He was a literature genius. Have you watched Leonardo Dicaprio’s Romeo and Juliette? It’s the same, but without the guns, the cars and the chopper of course :)

Abu_shakuush: yeah … you’re Bruce Lee and there are still virgins in New York ;-)

listen man, all i know about romio and juliet that they had the worst luck in the world, gal inno after she made herself look dead, she wakes up and finds that he KILLED HIMSELF, w zay ma beseer bel aflam el masrieh, she killed herself in turn, emlee7 ma gawwam romio afterwards, then fired himself in the head, then she woke up and … etshahadat, w rij3et mattat, moteh tabee3ieh! :) ma ba7eb el aflam el masrieh, bass ba7eb el blog taba3ak, so keep it going ;)

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 Who-Sane

    thank you mariam!!

Romeo and Juliette were two star-crossed lovers, that’s the whole point of the tragedy, is that no matter how much they tried, they won’t be with each other. w ba3dain Romeo and Juliette mosh zay el aflam el masriyeh, hiyyeh el aflam el masriyeh elli zay Romeo and Juliette ;-)

ya salaaam 3al ayyam Shakespeare ….

its worth to mention that the complete works of W. Shakespeare (abt kamshet plays … to be honest without indents) is worth about 24 $ while the complete works of dan brown is (only 4 novels) for 43 $ ( thats in KSA which will be more expensive than the US ) …. i just find that disturbing …

and about this theory … i THINK Qaddafi was one of its first adopters … i heard it from him many years ago … i think its written somwhere in his Green Book …

I really miss reading Shakespeare … it has been a while and i’ve been busy reading other books (and recently blogs) … i hope i will restart … ( by the time i was 18 i have read most of his plays ,,, not all in english though … )

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 mo

    lol @ shaikh zubair

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 Who-Sane

yes Isam, you’re right, all Shakespeare’s plays are cheap comparatively, but don’t forget that his works are centuries old.

You’re also right about the Qaddafi point, who else would come up with such a theory

    mo: welcome to Who-sane’s :-)
