Romeo and Juliette: The Not-So-Romantic Arabic Version

Dear to whom it may not concern …

The Western version of Shakespeare’s tragedy about the two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliette, is quite known to the whole world.

The Western Version: Juliette, the daughter of Lord Capulet, falls in love with Romeo, Son of Lord Montague. The two feuding families would never allow the marriage, and the events ended in the tragic loss of both, Romeo and Juliette. Very sad, yet romantic.

The controversial Arabic version: A 17-year-old Iraqi Yazeedi girl, Dua’ Khalil Aswad (دعاء خليل أسود) falls in love with a Sunni young man, and converts to Islam. Her family finds out, drag her into the middle of the street and stone her to death! Very sad, prosaic and not so romantic!

To be honest, when I first received this email, I thought it was a joke, or a very old video and Sunni fanatics claim the horrible story. But after seeing the huge media reaction, I realized it is true.

Dua’ StonedDua’ Khalil Aswad is the Iraqi Yazeedi girl who fell in love with a Sunni guy, and when people in her village found out about her atrocious doing, they dragged her to the streets, and stoned her to death, while bystanders encouraged them and took videos of the poor girl dying. Even when she died the men didn’t stop stoning her and throwing big blocks at her.

Doesn’t this remind you of the times when people used to burn heretics on the stake back in the ancient days of witchcraft? The difference is that witch hunting took place in the Middle Ages, this is happening NOW!

I’m very tolerant when it comes to religions, but a religion that claims God is a peacock, and that hell and evil don’t exist. Come on! Do you remember when the Iraqi Yazeedi MP, Kamran Khairi, condemned the Iraqi Parliament because MPs started their speeches with “God save us from the devil” (أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم)? He explicitly requested the Parliament not to bring up the word “devil” in a bad way, which sparked some media controversy back then over the Yazeedi religion.

Just so you’d know what I’m talking about, here is a video of stoning. Please note that this is extremely graphic and viewers discretion is advised.

But unlike the original Western version, the death of the two protagonists DID NOT bring peace to the two families (religions). And unfortunately, the prince (who represents the government or the authority) DID NOT conclude the tragedy with the following words:

A glooming peace this morning with it brings.
The sun for sorrow will not show his head.
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon’d, and some punished;
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

    وَإِذَا الْمَوْؤُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ
    بِأَيِّ ذَنبٍ قُتِلَتْ

thats what this story brings to mind

This is disgusting.. but basically it is a group version of an honour killing just more public and more barbaric, lets face it.

الله يكسر ايديهم ولاد هالحرام ولا تقول انها يهودية يا زلمة. فعلا بدهم حرق ملاعين الوالدين

Mohannad, will it make a difference whether they mention it or not? you are worried that west may think she is Muslim? what difference will that make? Many Muslim women are killed the same way every year in Iran and KSA and elsewhere. An additional crime associated with Islam will not make a difference. Your concern would have been legitimate if Islam condemns such a way of killing

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 Mohanned

Well, maybe this would be breaking news, but islam doesn’t approve this way of killing, and I am not going to teach you about islam, google is there, the books are out there, read and learn..And my concern is legitimate because when a hamas rocket falls on gas station it gets more coverage that when a pregnant woman get shot, and the fetus dies!! Don’t get me wrong that I support hamas and their stupidity, but you have to agree the double standards exist when it comes to covering islam, and I can’t blame them, because it is the fastest growing relegion with all the bad media ir gets..

    free education, sorry husain:
[edit] Honor Killings in the Bible
The Book of Leviticus in the Old Testament prescribes death for a number of perceived sexual transgressions, including adultery, homosexuality, and incest:

If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife— with the wife of his neighbour— both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.
If a man sleeps with his father’s wife, he has dishonoured his father. Both the man and the woman must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
If a man sleeps with his daughter-in-law, both of them must be put to death. What they have done is a perversion; their blood will be on their own heads.
If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is wicked. Both he and they must be burned in the fire, so that no wickedness will be among you.
If a man has sexual relations with an animal, he must be put to death, and you must kill the animal.
If a woman approaches an animal to have sexual relations with it, kill both the woman and the animal. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

    In islam:
Honor killing is forbidden in mainstream interpretations of Islam.[11] There is no specific mention of the practice in the Qur’an or Hadiths except in so far as the custom of killing baby girls to protect the family honor, which is specifically condemned in the Qur’an, was a form of honor killing. An honor killing refers specifically to extra-legal punishment by the family against the woman, and it is often argued that this is technically forbidden by the Sharia (Islamic law). Some modern Islamic religious authorities and Muslims disagree with extra-legal punishments such as honor killing and prohibit it, since they consider the practice to be a cultural issue.

    ENJOY!!

Yes Mariam, but this is even crueler than burying girls alive! This took place in day light and in front of dozens of onlookers, just imagine the pain, the humility!

Ali, Abu 7afartal: yes, I agree.

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 Who-Sane

I do have a question though: would this have happened if Saddam was still in control?

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 Hareega

Mohannad I think they did mention she was Yazidi at the end of the report. But I agree if Muslims were the ones who killed her Glen Beck would spend one hour cussing Muslims on CNN

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 Fadi Malian

Mohannad, it is funny for a muslim to learn about his religion from google random search! go to Bukhari and Muslim and you will find more than one Hadieth Sa7ee7 about two incidents the prophet did himself order and participate in stoning a woman and a man. The point here is not evaluating CNN bias and discussing the conspiracy theory, it is about tragedies that happen every day, some times in the name of religion and in other times because of religion (as a clear order by the religion). The real question, if you reach to a conclusion that your religion allow the stoning in particular case, will you stand by your religion and defend its point of view? Leave it? Change it? or just ignore and pretend its is not happening?

fade malyan, ya3ni inta beddak tefham aktar men allah??? shoo hal arrogance bednash nekhlas menno? lakom deenikom walana deenona!

walla the times Prophet Mohammed promised is now: when he said the rest of the world will jump on you like a preyer on its prey (i dont recall the exact phrase) hath law inno el islam the way it was 300 years ago, ma 7ada betla3 yetkhanfas, bass shoof 3ad, walla ya dobbaneh sarlek dokkaneh w sertee etsakree 3ala bakeeer!!! khalas, kol wa7ad yelzam beito ana bagool to avoid fetnet el masee7 el dajjal, which it seems to me its already taking place :s yalla, robba darraten nafe3a, it might be the end of opression as well, god knows we can handle just as much of opression, god knows we need a break :(

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 Mohanned

Ok fadi, I am against killing at some situations, but now if you want to go back to the situation where the prophet did this thing here is how it went: The women herself came to the prophet admiting adultery, the prophet told her , are you sure you did that, go back and think about, did the thing enter the thing? Go back to your home and think about it more..She came back and said I did it and I want to be punished…
Now for this punishment to take place, 4 men have to see it, and not only see it, they have to be men known for their honesty, and they have to see the “Penus” entering the “vagina”, which is impossible unless they are participating in an “orgy” so the only logical way is that the adulterer comes forward and admits doing so, but what we see now is CULTURE, islam cared alot about family and considered it the most sacred thing. I am not going to talk about other relegions because I am not the kind of guy that compares..I beleive that islam is MY relegion and once you become a muslim it is not a pick and choose game.I hope that you got the point!

  18. Gravatar Icon 18 Mohanned

One more thing Fadi, What is wrong with searching google, if I recall it is the # 1 search website in the world, So you actually want me to go to our “great, educated” scholars to learn about my relegion!! All relegious figures in all relegions now are everything but experts, so I would prefer to read different sources and choose what fits “my Stupidity” and If I can’t find what I am looking for, then God gave me some-billion brain cells which I prefer to use rather than letting them die from “under-usage”. I don’t really know If you are a muslim or athiest or whatever but attacking relegions will not bring us closer, I hope that you understand that and not be like robertson and the burned fallwel!

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 Fadi Malian

Yes I got the point and thank you for taking the time to explain Mohannad. However, I do not see a big difference between those who believe in this kind of punishment and those approve the action in the clip, regardless how difficult to prove it as you explained, or when to apply it, but the concept is still there!! The technicality of how difficult to prove or not is something that can change with time, what matters the most is the concept.

I did not mean to take the discussion into religion, but I was surprised by your comment about CNN bias against Islam while what they mention most of the time is a moderate version about what Islam is (at least in the minds of the majority). So even if they bring stoning as an argument against Islam, they in no way misrepresenting the facts. Stoning does exists in Islam as a method of punishment - at leas as the majority of muslims do believe.

    Have a nice day Mohannad.

I do agree that CNN comes at the end of the List maybe with MSNBC, but do you watch glenn beck? Do you see hypocracy? Do you see him hosting muslim lesbians, but in other episodes he attacks “christian” faggots!! Why did all the west media become islam experts after 9/11? Did they help bring us closer or did they feed the hatred? I don’t know, maybe I am just misled by “facts”!

this is sick!! when i watched it on cnn i assumed she was a shai since they said she wanted to marry a sunni muslim. poor girl! she should have run alot further..what a stupid family and community..i hope she has peace now..this honour killing crap is very pathetic! when a whole family’s honour depends on it’s girls virtue, there is something very wrong with picture!

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 Who-sane

Mohanned. You are good man. Please don’t waste your time with racist biased ignorants (i.e. that Fadi). Thay arue for the sake of arument. They dont intend to seek the truth..u know why? because it scares them to death! Because it means they will discover they r on the wrong path.. and they have to abanbon their animal desires.. and purify themselves and be responsible for their actions in this life… otherwise!!
