Ladies and gentlemen: I present to you, the 8th wonder of the world: Dr. Zahi Hawass!
Dr. Zahi Hawass, Head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, believes that the New 7 Wonders of the World competition, that’s been going on for 7 years, which more than 100 million people voted "has no value".
Then in a shocking statement where Hawass "defies anyone in the world to remember the names of the New 7 Wonder of the World in a couple of months, whereas any 6 year old grader would remember the old 7 Wonders of the World".
So basically:
According to Dr. Hawass, the Great Wall of China won’t be remembered in a week! According to Dr. Hawass, Petra will be totally forgotten in a week! According to Dr. Hawass, all new wonders of the world will be forgotten in a week!
I’ve always respected Dr. Hawass and I’ve always valued his opinions, but to state, overtly to the press, that the new 7 wonders of the world "will be forgotten in a couple of months" is way too much than I can take!
Now isn’t he a real wonder in this world?
Well who’s to be honest it was a smart move of him, he got coverage more than the pyramids

To be frank with you…. Comparing Petra to “Jesus the redeemer” is an insult. A 31 meter statue built with 20th century technology compared to Petra built BY HAND over two millenia ago

I agree with Q, but at least we as jordanians had the chance to make more people know about petra and jordan, I don’t care how much profit they made..The happiness of jordanians are PRICELESS, the smiles on the kids faces and how they felt proud is more than enough for me.

They’re already world-wide known monuments, but what Hawass is doing is unjustifiable!
He didn’t even say ONE congratulatory word for Petra and refused to acknowledge its wondrous stature!
Actually the UNISCO be-litteled the whole thing and does not acknowledged it, face it guys the whole voting for a private company is seriously worth nothing .. this man did the most clever and smart thing to do ..

Let me be as blunt as possible here, since we’re brain storming..
Now regardless of the sientific validation of the competition, We all..have a feeling called “national pride” and we all take it to be part of our national pride when it comes to historical monuments and events that happen to be within our “national” borders, and I’m aware of the green envious feelings our egyptian friends are eaten with because someone dared to say the pyramids are NOT the only great achievement humanity bore..it might be the greatest, that’s also debatable..but its not the only one..now whether this was a decision made by an ancient greek philosopher..or by abu 3awwad is irrelevent! the point is that there really are more places in the world that fit the term “wonder” than the great pyramids.
Now..going back to the argument of who built what..none of us can claim that we built anything..but I dare Mr. Hawass..since he’s a great egyptologist, to get us a list of the names of the people who built the pyramids..and I’m very sure that he would be able to trace it..in the same manner our friends on the nile predicted an overwhelming victory in 67..all the way down to himself and la vache qui rit!

Exactly tamara, no one is saying that the Pyramids are not a wonder of the world, they are and they’ll always be! But that does not mean that it’s the ONLY wonder of the world. I’m sad that this is the reaction of one of the most prominent Egyptology authorities in the world and he’s saying this crap, so we can only imagine the envy of the rest of the population! … I thought we’re Arabs, brothers, we should all be happy for other Arab nations’ achievements.
He could’ve said “congratulations to Petra” or anything for that matter, but not what he said up there!
Yes, it just pisses me off that he’s saying all that crap instead of celebrating this achievement with us and encouraging more excavation efforts in Petra!

i agree that Egyptians think that no other culture is as great as their culture, and I this is making them ignorant, I have a couple of Egyptians working with me, and we discussed the issue of new 7 wonders but i stopped because it was going to be an uncivilized discussion, they are amazing in the way they argue without a clue, I mean the guy didn’t know what Petra is because he is ignorant, still he was arguing like hell!
