The long journey into finding one’s true self

He became a famous pop star just at the age of 18. His songs reached Britain’s Top 10.

In 1975, he reports having pleaded with God to save him. He described the event in an interview some years later: “I suddenly held myself and I said, ‘Oh God! If you save me, I’ll work for you.’” The near-death experience intensified his long-held quest for spiritual truth.

He had looked into Buddhism “Zen and I Ching, numerology, tarot cards and astrology”, but when his brother gave him a copy of the Qur’an, he began to find peace with himself and began his transition to Islam.

Unfortunately, I’m not very religious myself, but I do admire the stories of people who worked so hard to find the true meaning of life and eternal peace.

Did you know who I’m talking about?

If your answer is yes or no, do yourself a favor, nnlighten your mind and soul and watch the video below. It’s 36 minutes long, but it’s worth every minute of it.

damn it, I have exactly 36 minutes free time, but Youtube is blocked on the company’s server, whom are you talking about?

  6. Gravatar Icon 6 Who-sane

Mariam: shayfeh ballah how amazing some people are! … yes, the comments have been hi-jaxed! :)
Maioush: yes of course elik award :) … and yeah .. he’s an amazing person .. I truly admire him.

sel3: I’m talking about Yusuf Islam, aka Cat Stevens. Watch the video when you get time, it’s very thought provoking!

I didn’t know neither Cat Stevens before nor Yusuf Islam, but man, i feel so tiny…

sel3, tiny enough to fit under a rock? lol kidding bas u really have to be living under a rock not to have heard of cat stevens/yusuf islam. the story is inspirational.

its funny how we, the ones born into islam, sometimes take God’s gift for granted, and yet ppl who convert to islam have more hold onto it.. the irony..

    it is amazing eh…
VA i know a group of women who have converted to islam..and im always amazed how devout and knowlegeable they are in islam…alot more that us born to islam are…it makes me feel bad…:(

Sel3: I’m sure you’ve heard some of his songs before … most notably ‘Wild World’, where he sings “Oh baby, baby, it’s a wild world … it’s hard to get by, just upon a smile” … if that doesn’t ring a bell bikoon fee moshkileh ;)

VA: yes it is amazing and ironic how the newly converts are the best practicers of a religion. Did you really watch the video your background information?

sam: true that! Sam, I bought his new CD, it’s amazing!! He sings “tala3 al badro 3alaina” in an English accent, and surprisingly, it sounded wonderful!

VA and Sam, don’t feel bad, it’s the same way for Christians. I’m a ‘convert’, and ‘born-into-it’ Christians say the same thing.

Being ‘used’ to the privilege of prayer, seeing God’s hand at work, assured of His mercy, it can damper the inner commitment to Him. For me, even after 27 years, I still wake up amazed that He loves me and excited to see what He has in store for the day. When my passion for Him fades, sometimes thanking Him for all His gifts stirs my heart again.

My favorite Cat Stevens song was the hymn “Morning Has Broken”.

actually i have no audio hon bil maktab so i dint watch it, but i know the story of cat becominh yusuf..

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 Sel3

VA, yes I’ve never heard of cat stevens or yusuf islam, now does that make me live under a rock? Dear, I’m not into western music that much, and not that religious person “unfortunately” to follow the news of all the people who convert to Islam or even yusuf islam despite his story being “inspirational” forgive my ignorance please.

Who-Sane, I know this song, but never knew who performed it or what his story is, thanks for enlightening me.
