Circassians: Loyalty at its best!

One thing I really admire about Circassians in Jordan is their genuine loyalty, devotion and patriotism. Despite the fact that their roots go far as to the Kafkas, yet they are the most loyal and patriotic citizens of the countries they chose as their homes. I’m talking about Circassians in Jordan that is, as I’m not familiar at all with Circassians in Syria.

Recently, our blogosphere witnessed some attacks on Jordan, its people, its government and its monarchy. But what astonished me is that while some Jordanians were quick to support the claims and added insult to injury and while some other Jordanians took a moderate stance, it was our Circassian brothers who rushed to Jordan’s aid, despite all the criticism that befell them! It was so comforting, that it actually gave me goosebumps, to see the level of loyalty and patriotism some of our Cricassian brothers have shown.

As a Jordanian, I take great pride in knowing that there are people in our country whom Jordan can rely on when the going gets tough, those people would run to Jordan’s defense no matter what the consequence or the negative effects may be. Now THAT is loyalty at its best!

A big ’wapsaw’ and a hat tip to our loyal brothers.

Things guys do that make women think they are perverts

I recently came across ‘the 7 things some guys do that make women think they’re perverts’ post, which is fine, but can only apply to Westerners and their point of views.

So I thought of making a localized list, a guide, a manual - not necessarily for Arab men, but for men from any nationality making a living in the Arab world - on things they should NOT do when they’re around women. For this I’d like the help of my readers in putting this list together.

So for a start, I thought of the following points:

Guess the Nationality!

UPDATE: *percussion* And now … the moment you’ve all been waiting for … (I’ve always wanted to say that) the correct nationalities have been posted!

One thing I love about Dubai is its multi-ethnic environment. In August 2006, the number of nationalities in Dubai exceeded 200, and that’s like a year ago, so I’m positive the number is higher now, although I couldn’t find any reliable source for that.

But still, 202 nationalities in one city IS A LOT, MAN! I never even knew there were more than 200 countries around the world, but then again, I’m geographically-challenged.

Take for example some of the colleagues I work with. All the names below are 100% accurate: Continue reading ‘Guess the Nationality!’

Music Matbakh: Smellin’ Good!

Update: A video of Music Matbakh’s concert in Amman can now be found in the bottom of this post, courtesy Khobbeizeh.

It didn’t sound very attractive when I first heard it from the husky-voiced British-accented BBC reporter, but it was certainly the original name that had caught my attention, Music Matbakh it said. And when the radio station played short bits of their gigs, I was spellbound with the brilliance of the music. It was an unusual mixture of Arabic, Western and New Age … but something I’ve never experienced before.

We’re not the only ones …

Dear to whom it may not concern …

It’s an undeniable fact: the majority of Arabs know how to pronounce the letter P, but they just DON’T want to, either because it “doesn’t matter” … or because it’s “difficult to prounounce it” and my favorite is … “mosh bainna ya zalameh!” …. of course that’s when you dare and correct someone!

Well excuse me, but … LA2 BAINNA W NOSS! Then you give the old and neverending lesson, how people and beebol are NOT the same, how park and bark are NOT the same, how pray and bray are NOT the same, and big and pig are NOT the same, etc, etc … Some get really confused, so they start prounouncing everything with a P … “ohh … very peautiful!” … or “woow very pig“.
