A happy day for journalism in the Arab region

September 26th, 2007 marks a very pleasant day for journalism in both Jordan and the UAE, as both King Abdullah II and Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid, coincidentally, stood up for freedom of speech in their countries: a move that was widely celebrated in all local newspapers and journalists associations.

Shaikh Mohammad issued instructions that no journalist is to be jailed for reasons related to his work

King Abdullah II confirms that there will be no restrictions on freedom of speech.

Guess the Nationality!

UPDATE: *percussion* And now … the moment you’ve all been waiting for … (I’ve always wanted to say that) the correct nationalities have been posted!

One thing I love about Dubai is its multi-ethnic environment. In August 2006, the number of nationalities in Dubai exceeded 200, and that’s like a year ago, so I’m positive the number is higher now, although I couldn’t find any reliable source for that.

But still, 202 nationalities in one city IS A LOT, MAN! I never even knew there were more than 200 countries around the world, but then again, I’m geographically-challenged.

Take for example some of the colleagues I work with. All the names below are 100% accurate: Continue reading ‘Guess the Nationality!’

Winning the Lottery!

Last week I got a call at approximately 10:30 am. ’No number’ appeared on the screen. Expecting it to be one of my friends form the States or Europe, I picked up and the sweet feminine voice on the other end of the line, who was trying so hard to fake an American accent, started the conversation by congratulating me for winning $ 72,000 in a lottery!

Things that’ll haunt you forever!

You’d think by leaving Jordan that you’re not going to witness any Wi7dat or Faisaly fanaticism. Hehehe, well you’re ignorant if you think you’ll ever escape the wi7dat-fisaly farce!

I was driving to work this morning when I came across this guy:

A Sickening Comparison

Sicko

I watched SiCKO last night, after hearing news that the movie is available on the net. Although it’s not released yet, Michael Moore has no problem with people uploading/downloading the movie from the net and pointed out that copyright laws are “too restrictive”. Of course, the aim of the whole movie was to present the shocking facts to the viewers and I was indeed shocked to learn what kind of health system The US of A, the richest and strongest country in the world, is providing its citizens with.

Although the information presented in the movie were appalling, but the fact is that I’m not the best to review the movie, because a) I suck at reviewing movies. b) I was not exposed to the health system in the US, Canada, France or the UK. But unquestionably the movie did give us a quick preview of what kind of health insurance systems citizens are entitled to in these countries, and that’s why I couldn’t help but perform a quick comparison between the crappy excuse for a health system in the US and the health system of, not an average Arab country with a mid-sized economy such as Jordan (I don’t even want to come close to that comparison), but to, the wealthiest country in the Middle East: the UA of E.
