Your license and registration, please?

Yesterday, I got pulled over by a Dubai Police officer for taking a wrong turn, and for … well … not wearing a seat belt (I know, I know, it’s not good for your health).

What was strange though, is that as the officer was handing me the ticket, he apologized for “ruining my day”!

WHAT?!

YES! He actually smiled and said: “سامحنا عالمخالفة عكرنا مزاجك”. (Sorry about the ticket, it must’ve ruined mood).

He wasn’t being sarcastic, mind you. He actually meant it!

I mean, this is not the first time I get ticket, but it was certainly the first time a police officer apologizes to me. Because did he really have to? No! Do they teach them to be apologize to traffic violators at the Police Academy? I seriously doubt it!

I’m sure he did not apologize for giving me a ticket, that’s his job after all, but surely something occurred to him; perhaps he thought: “here I am, giving this man in a suite, who’s obviously doing something related to his work, a ticket, which definitely screwed up his entire day!

I took the ticket, thanked him and drove off, wearing both my seat built and a big smile on my face.

In my mind, I thanked him for the effort he took to not ruin my mood. Although in his situation, and his authority, standing under the sun for hours every day, I can imagine it’s not difficult to act obnoxiously.

Thank you Mr. Police Man, thank you!

The Funny Clown Comes to Town!

The only good thing this man really did during his whole 8 years of presidency is:

Giving us a day off!
.
Tomorrow (Monday) has been declared a public holiday in Dubai.
.
Happy Holidays everyone!

How I started my week

This just happened a couple of hours ago and I’m still absentminded with the whole situation!
.
Setting: My direct boss sitting behind her desk, with her boss sitting on one of the two chairs in front of her desk, crossing one leg over the other, his left bare foot on his right, talking while playing with the ugly toes of his ugly left foot with his ugly right hand, like there’s no tomorrow!
.
I walk in with a big smile on my face.
.
He stands up, pulls out the same right hand, that a moment ago was thoroughly unearthing the ugly stuff between his toes, and gives me a really firm hand shake, as if shaking the hand of his long-lost brother.
.
Ever the talker, he asks me 7 or 8 questions – all different versions of ’How are you?’ – and I respond with 7 or 8 answers – all different versions of ’I’m fine thank you!’ – all while clinging on to my hand like a drowning man.
.
After making sure I’m sincerely fine, and that he had successfully transferred every kind of a germ that could possibly exist between any two toes to my hand, he slowly loosened his grip and set my soul free.
.
Now isn’t that just a wonderful way to start your week?!

Amal: the bitter hope

Amal, a beautiful, young, Emirati woman, was the first colleague I got to know at my new job. Simply because her desk is close to mine. I was glad that my desk is right next to Amal’s.
.
Every day I go to work, Amal would greet me with the biggest smile ever. She has a sweet smile that is sure to get you over your griefs.
.
As her name indicates, Amal is full of hope, dreams, aspirations and all the optimism a person can have.
.
Sorry, allow me to rephrase that: Amal was full of hope, dreams, and all the aforementioned.
.
Yesterday I arrived at work, ready to be the first to announce the good news of Pamela Anderson, and expecting to be greeted with her lovely smile, but it was no where to be found.
.
Instead, Amal looked so devastated, as if someone close to her had passed away. I really thought so, but I remembered the conversation we had last Thursday:
.
me: you seem so excited today, Amal.
Amal: Yes! My boyfriend and his family are coming to propose tomorrow!
me: The two love birds will FINALLY be together!
.
Amal just burst with laughter and joy! … Little did she know what will happen later that day.
.
Unlike any other day, I was greeted with no smiles, no nothing … silence and heartache prevailed. Yes, she was heartbroken. You could see it in her dreary, teary, eyes … I dared not say a single word.
.
First I thought the suitor’s parents rejected her, but no, it was the other way around: Amal’s parents gave the poor fellow ONE option only. If he truly wants her, he has to pay more than half a million Dirhams! (more than $ 140,000). 300,000 dirhams for her dowry (in cash), and the rest for the wedding party, which has to go on for days and nights, attended by as many as a thousand guests!
.
Of course, the newly graduate, suitor could not afford to pay that absurd amount money, and, against his will, wisely, decides to try his luck elsewhere. He knew for a fact that nothing will change her parents’ minds. She’s beautiful, smart, educated, and they know that one day a man with a pocket full of money, regardless his age, education or sophistication, will hear of her beauty and drag her, gift-wrapped, back to his home.
.
I’m sure I haven’t seen the end of Amal’s smiles, but I know that they won’t be as joyful and cheerful as before. And knowing Amal, I’m sure that she’d rather go on living her life as a spinster, than be traded under the pretext of “caring for her future”..
